Tips to reduce the website load time
February 17, 2010 | Posted by Supachet Kotsrimuang | 3 CommentsHave you ever been bored with waiting for any websites taking so much time to be completely loaded? I bet everyone is. Significant load time can give the bad experience to your website visitors, probably leading to unwanted actions from them. Therefore, today I will tell you about what you should not do to make your website load time high.
- No multiple CSS files : If you implement more than one CSS file for your site, it is recommended to merge them into one file. Also, it is not recommended to place the Style Sheet in every web page of your website since doing this can increase the size of your web page, leading to high loading time.
- No too many Java Scripts : JavaScript can also effect the website load time. Therefore, you should consider employing only necessary JavaScripts. For example, instead of using multiple Analytics programs that normally require you to embed the code in your web pages, you should pick up only one program.
- No too many images : You should not have too many images in your website. If images can be converted to something else that can reduce the size of your web page, please do it. For instance, I have seen a lot of websites whose contents or menus are created as images instead of texts. Therefore, if contents or any menus in your site are still images, you should convert them into texts.
- Optimize images : Any images should be optimized before you add to your site since optimization will reduce the image size with acceptable quality. If you create the graphics for your website by Photoshop, to save the images, select ‘Save for Web and Devices..’. Then, the images will be optimized to use in the website.
- Make contents cachable : You should make any contents in your website cachable if it is possible since the cached contents will be saved into users’ PCs or Laptops so next time when your website is opened, the cached contents will be loaded from the machine, which is faster than over the Net.
OK these are some tips for reducing website load time. However, more advanced techniques will be used depending on many factors. For example, you may require specific solutions if your site is Joomla.
