Google’s New SERPs and Their Effect

May 17, 2010 | Posted by Sujeet K. Singh | 1 Comment

Recently we noticed that Google has redesigned it’s search result pages. They have had those search options available already for a few months, but have not been in front of the user. With this new design, users don’t have any choice but to notice the options that are available. It’s not too different from Bing or Yahoo in that respect. The only difference is that a lot more people search with Google on a regular basis, in fact, for the last few months Google reportedly has been dominating the search market even more than usual.

Now since Google has rolled out it’s much awaited new SERP we have to think how it’s going to affect searchers behavior and businesses, which are always in lookout for better search rankings.

More Engagement from Searchers:

With more options available users will start going to the different options Google provides them, taking them to different sets of results. Now that the options are in the limelight, users are more likely to use them. Yahoo and Bing have already seen this change with their filtering options.

Being Social Even More Important for Businesses:

The options in the left panel pull from “everything” – classic Google results, blogs from Google blog search, books from Google books, images from Google image search, news from Google news, maps from Google maps, shopping from Google product search, videos from Google video, and Updates from Google’s real-time search.

Google’s real-time search is of particular note, because before users generally saw this option only on select news queries unless they sought after them. Real-time search for any query is now much more accessible, which makes real-time search a bigger deal for search marketing.

Social interactions are becoming more important. The new SERPs also place much more stress on social search results. The same goes for location. You’ll notice “nearby” is one of the options. Discussions is another option. Google appears to pull from a variety of sources for this one; this means that engaging in conversation throughout the web has some value to Google’s results. There are definitely a lot of results from forums in these results. Q&A and blogs articles are also seen as results for this option.

Ranking Diversification in Google is the Key:

What it comes down to is that ranking in Google’s various search engines has become even more important for getting traffic from Google. I expect traffic for sites listed in these to improve as a result of Google’s new SERP. Remember that Google has been testing this for a substantial amount of time. If Yahoo was seeing increased engagement, imagine what Google will bring in.

Though they have already experimented a great deal with this layout, yet looking at some less relevant search results I expect we’ll see a lot more tweaking as time goes on.

April 9, 2010 | Posted by Supachet Kotsrimuang | No Comments

Email marketing is still widely used by many businesses as we can see that we or at least I get a lot of advertising emails sending to my mailbox daily. Also, in many websites you will see the boxes asking you to fill your emails in order to periodically receive newsletters from them. Email Marketing is quite working well especially with people or your customers who choose to receive your emails or subscribe your newsletter. Therefore, you should not just send your emails to anyone or your emails can annoy people. Today, I will introduce you to one free email blast management tool named PHPlist so if anyone is planing to so email marketing or newsletter, they may use this tool.

You can download this tool from http://www.phplist.com/download, which is free and the latest version is 2.10.10.

In order to install, first of all, you have to extract the zipped file. After that, you have to config the file ‘config.php’ in the directory ‘config’ under the directory ‘lists’. The main thing you have to config is your database info. Then, you have to upload the directory ‘lists’ to your server so your PHPlist will be located at http://www.yourdomain.com/lists/. The rest of the process will be done via the browser so you have to go to http://www.yourdomain.com/lists/admin/. The default username and password are admin and phplist relatively and of course you can change later. After signing in, you will go to the main admin page. You may configure something else like the welcome message when people choose to subscribe your newsletter. But here I will tell you how to send the email.

To send the email, you must have the list of people who will receive your email so the first thing is to create the list. To do so, you have to click the menu ‘lists’ and then ‘add a list’. Next, you have to fill the list name and check the box labeled ‘Check this box to make this list active (listed)’. The rest of fields are optional. After this, you have to add the email addresses of the people that you will send the newsletter to. If your newsletter is HTML one, don’t forget to check the box labeled ‘I prefer to receive emails in HTML format’.

OK you have got the list of people who want to receive your newsletter. It is time to send to them. Click the ‘send a message’ menu. On the content tab, fill the information you want to show in email. However, in the message editor, if you prepare your newsletter as a webpage you can add the tag [URL:http://www.yourdomain.com/yournewsletterpage.html]. With this tag, the system will fetch the contents of your newsletter and add into the email. On the format tab, you have to choose the format of your newsletter (HTML / Text). On the lists tab, you can select which lists you want to send your newsletter to. Once everything is ready, you just press the button ‘Send the message to the selected mailing lists’.

In my opinion, I think this one is quite good for the free one but if you guys know any better ones, please share here …..

Some advantages of .htaccess file

February 17, 2010 | Posted by Supachet Kotsrimuang | 1 Comment

Today, I would like to talk about one file name .htaccess that I think it is very useful. This file can do a lot of things useful for your website management or even your online marketing like SEO. In order to create this file, you just open any text editors you are familiar with like EditPlus, Dreamweaver or even WordPad or NotePad and then name the file as .htaccess. It seems this file does not have the filename and it has only extension as htaccess. Then, let see what we can add to this file to help you do these following things.

Custom 404 : 404 is the page normally coming up when users try to visit any non existing pages. The sample of default 404 page is below.

blog1

If you want to have your own 404 page like the one we have below you can do that by

blog2

- creating your 404 page and uploading to your server
- Adding this line in .htaccess files
ErrorDocument 404 (The location of your 404 page)
- Uploading .htaccess to the root level of your server
Then once users visit any of your non existing web pages, your custom 404 page will be shown.

301 Redirect : This is the method for redirecting old webpages to the new ones with the value that the old web pages have such as the rankings in search engines. Also, it can prevent your website to have diffetent URLs, one with www and the other without www (i.e. http://www.aaa.com and http://aaa.com). What you need to do is adding these lines into your .htaccess file

rewritecond %{http_host} ^aaa.com [nc]
rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.aaa.com/$1 [r=301,nc]
This will redirect http://aaa.com to http://www.aaa.com

Rewrite URL : As you may know that search engines normally do not like the dynamic urls that can be mostly found in EC sites or sites created by CMS like Joomla or PHPNuke. In order to make your URLs static, you have to specify the rules in .htaccess file. This is the sample

RewriteRule dvr/dvr-capture-card\.html$ products_detail.php?id=12

If you add the line above in .htaccess file, it will convert
http://www.aaa.com/products_detail.php?id=12 to

http://www.aaa.com/dvr/dvr-capture-card.html

However, .htaccess basically works with the websites run by Apache Web Server. Therefore, if you use something else as a Web Server likw IIS, you may need different ways to do the things mentioned here.

Online Marketing Strategy 4Ps Cont : Price & Promotion

February 17, 2010 | Posted by Supachet Kotsrimuang | 4 Comments

Last time, I wrote the article about how to apply 4P strategy to online marketing but there are 2 more Ps, Price and Promotion, that I did not mention in the last article. Therefore, today I will continue 4Ps stratety with Price and Promotion.

Price : When you sell your products online and if your products are physical ones, your customers cannot downloaded your products via the Internet so we can see that shipment will be involved in your online business process and so does the shipping expense. This is related to your product prices in that first you may add the shipping cost to your product prices and say that you will ship the products to your customers without any charge.

On the other hand, you keep your product prices the same and inform your customers how much they have to pay for delivery cost. Alternatively, you may set the minimum number of products customers have to purchase to get free delivery.

Promotion : Most promotions used in traditional marketing like bundling products as a package, giving a discount, offering free stuffs, buy 1 get 1 or free trail can be also used in online marketing. However, these promotions should be used to support your online marketing goals. For example,

- In case that you want to increase the number of website visitors or online sales, you may offer more discount if people buy your products via your website than when they buy from your stores.

- In case that, you want to increase the number of sign ups, you may offer free stuffs or services if people sign up to be your members.

- Or in case that you want to collect people’ emails that you may use to do email marketing in the future, you may ask people to answer the sepcial question by email to get the permium awards.

Therefore, we can see that 4Ps strategy can be applied to online marketing but you have to adapt any of them or all of them according to changes of technologies, customer behavior, etc. When you want to turn to online business, you may have to do something with your product, price, place / channel and promotion.

Online Marketing strategy : 4Ps

February 17, 2010 | Posted by Supachet Kotsrimuang | No Comments

If you are working in marketing field or if your degree is about marketing, I am sure that you know 4Ps, which are Product, Price, Place and Promotion since 4Ps is a basic marketing strategy used by most businesses. However, when you turn your business to online business, you should also change your 4Ps strategy. Therefore, today I would like to talk about 4Ps strategy that is applied for online marketing like what you have to do with your Product, Price, Place and Promotion when you do business via Internet.

Product : When you sell your products via your website, your customers cannot view, touch or try your products. Therefore, the most important thing is information. What you have to do is providing all necessary information about your products in the website such as price, image, size, weight, materials, instructions, etc. Without any of this information, your customers may not be able to make decision to buy or they may go to other websites since what they need to do is just type the new URL in an address bar of the browser. Therefore, please keep in your mind that ‘Information’ is the most important thing.

Moreover, you should check if your physical products can be converted to online or digital products. For example, think about music CDs. In the past, people normally buy CDs form the shops but currently people love to download mp3 files from the website because people nowadays like to use the products immediately. They do not want to wait. Therefore, if you sell something like music CDs, movie DVDs, books, etc. you may allow your customers to download them via your website.

In addition, you may allow your customers to customize their products. I will use the case of music CDs again in that music CDs normally contain 10-20 songs, that are not selected by the customers but nowadays when people can download songs from the Internet, they can choose which songs they want to download. Then, they may write their selected songs into CDs. Customization can be also applied to other products like

Place : The place or channel you use to promote your products to your customers has to be changed as well since when we talk about online, we mainly focus on Internet so it means you should make your products available on the Internet, not groceries, brick and mortar stores, sale people, vending machines, etc. These following places / channels can be used to distribute your products on the Internet.

Search Engines – As mentioned in my previous articles that search engines have been increasingly used by Internet users when they are looking for anything.

Customers’ Mailboxes – Instead of sending product brochures to customers’ houses, you may try email blast to send information about your new products, promotion, news, etc to your customers.

Other websites relevant to your products – Placing banners or Text Ads in other websites related to your products can draw significant visitors to your website.

Social Media / Network – Currently, people love to connect with other people as we can see that Social Media and Network are more and more popular like Hi5, Facebook or Twitter.

For another 2Ps, which are Price and Promotion, I will talk about them in the next article.
